Some of the projects are VA hospital entertainment, local youth activities: Boys State, Girls State, Junior Legion, Baseball, Scholarships, and Oratorical Americanism Contest. The Post provides entertainment for VA hospitals and a Christmas party for the Norfolk County Hospital. The American Legion participates in memorial observance throughout the year such as Memorial Day, July 4th, Veterans Day, and funeral services for members of the American Legion and Post 86 when requested. Preamble Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion. For God and country we associate ourselves together for the following purposes - To uphold and defend the constitution of the United States of America; To maintain law and order; To foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism; To preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in the great wars; To inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state, and nation; To combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses; To make right the master of might; To promote peace and good-will on earth; To safeguard and transmit to posterity, the principles of justice, freedom, and democracy; To consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness. Membership Any person shall be eligible for membership in the American Legion who was a member of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Air Force of the United States and assigned to active duty at some time during any of the following periods: WWI - April 6 ,1917 to November 11, 1918 WWII - December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 Korea - June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955 Vietnam - December 22, 1961 to May 7, 1975 Lebanon & Grenada - August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984 Panama - December 20, 1989 to January 31, 1990 Persian Gulf - August 2, 1990 to be determined US Merchants Marines - December 7, 1941 to August 15, 1945 Post 86 encourages all eligible veterans to become members of the post - remember there is ''Strength in Numbers.'' |
